Moravian Chicken Pie

2 1/3 cup flour
1/2 cup shortening
1 tsp salt (or to taste)
ice water
3 to 4 cups cooked chicken boned and chopped
1/4 tsp black pepper
3 T butter
1 cup chicken broth seasoned to taste with salt


Make crust for double crust pie with 2 cups flour. Cut in shortening. Add salt and ice water to make a pastry that clings together. Divide in half. Roll out one half on lightly floured board; line a 9 inch pie pan. Roll the second half for the top. Make gashes in it to vent. Spoon chicken and pepper into crust. Top with second crust and seal edges. Brush with melted butter; sprinkle with remaining 1/3 cup flour and 2 tablespoons butter. Bake at 450 for 25 minutes or until done. Remove from oven and carefully spoon hot chicken brothe into gashes in pastry.
